About Us

We are a team of student videographers, photographers, reporters, designers, developers, and faculty who came to Maui to share stories and highlight local voices with care, thought, and research. Mālama Maui: The Land We Hold is a multimedia project from MEJO 584 at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Media and Journalism that explores how communities continue forward in the aftermath of the 2023 Lahaina fires while also reflecting the people, culture, and environment that shape Maui. We recognize that news can often be extractive, especially in a place that has been widely covered. We approached our work with intention, prioritizing native Hawaiians and local perspectives while taking time to understand the context behind the stories we were entrusted with. Through this project, we aim to tell these stories with care and keep the focus on the people who shared them.
